Plain-language guides to help you advocate with confidence.

An IEP (Individualized Education Program) is a legally binding document for students who qualify for special education services. It outlines your child's current performance, goals, services, and accommodations. The school team, including you as a parent, creates and reviews it at least once a year.
A 504 Plan provides accommodations for students with disabilities so they can access education on equal footing. It does not provide specialized instruction, but covers things like extended time, preferential seating, modified assignments, and other supports.
  • What specific services is my child receiving, and how often?
  • How is my child's progress toward their goals being measured?
  • What accommodations are being used in the classroom?
  • What happens if my child is not making adequate progress?
  • Who is responsible for implementing each service?
  • Can I receive progress reports more frequently?
Parents have the right to: participate fully in IEP meetings, request an independent educational evaluation, review all school records, receive written prior notice before the school changes services, file a complaint if services are denied, and request mediation or a due process hearing if disputes arise.
  • Your copy of the current IEP or 504 Plan
  • Recent progress reports and report cards
  • Any doctor or therapist notes related to your child's needs
  • A written list of your questions and concerns
  • A trusted support person (family member, advocate)
  • A notepad or phone to take notes during the meeting

Simple, honest pricing
